Rosewood Institute Faculty Member Brad Lamm Shares Personal Journey to Teach Others
Recently, Brad Lamm, BR-I, CAI, a Rosewood Institute© faculty member and a nationally-renowned author, teacher and interventionist, presented his insights and experience to a group of American Airlines Employee Assistance Program professionals in Miami as part of his partnership with Rosewood Centers for Eating Disorders and the Palm Beach Institute.
His moving talk described the loneliness, despair and fear associated with seeing a loved one struggle with a self-harming behavior, as well as steps that professionals, family and friends can take to over come the obstacles associated with addition. Brad presented cutting-edge strategies that move past the helplessness and pain to enable recovery for not only the person struggling with illness or addiction, but also for the network of family and friends surrounding that person.
How do you facilitate an intervention on someone that doesn’t want help? How do you get that person to engage in a discussion, a process, a decision that moves them from addiction and into the first steps of recovery?
Speaking from his own recovery from bulimia nervosa, crystal meth, tobacco and alcoholism, Brad is empathic to the struggle while exercising well-honed skills in dealing with the distorted thinking and denial that keeps the client in the chaos.
Brad believes the family and friends (the “voices that matter”) are uniquely poised to interrupt illness and enable healing through their own spoken “eyewitness accounts” to offer a “change plan” for their loved one. His mind-body-spirit approach helps family and friends walk from a past of pain, addiction and brokenness, into a new way of living and loving.
Members of the audience were inspired by his presentation and it served as a catalyst for even more involvement by the American Airlines Employee Assistance Program professionals.
“Brad offered real-life tips and strategies that can help all of us that assist our fellow employees,” said David Hackney, EAP coordinator for American Airlines’ Transport Workers Union Local 561. “His personal story of recovery serves as an inspiration to all of us to work harder to help our members and their families. No one is beyond help.”
Brad Lamm is the author of five books, including How to Help the One You Love: A New Way to intervene, Just 10 LBS: Easy Steps to Weighing What You Want (FINALLY!) and Just 10 Minutes: Your Blueprint to Quit Smoking. He is a Creator & Producer of the eight-part docu-series “Addicted to Food” on OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network) and serves on the Board of Dr. Oz’s HealthCorps. Brad speaks worldwide in association with The Rosewood Institute©, highlighting intervention approaches to helping those suffering from eating disorders. He is a regular contributor to both the Dr. Oz and Today shows.
